Safer Than Childbirth

The story of a woman who lived--and died of an abortion--in the mid-1800s, just when abortion was outlawed for the first time in the United States

Author Tamara Dean presents Safer Than Childbirth, the story of a woman who "lived and died of an abortion" in the mid-1800s, just when abortion was outlawed for the first time in the United States.

Tamara describes how women carried out abortions when it was commonplace in earlier times, before it was outlawed. She traces the history of laws about abortion and the origins of the anti-abortion efforts in the US.

Clean Truck Coalition Puts Pedal to the Metal
Activists accelerate state rules for zero emission truck transition

Summary:

Diesel exhaust is heating the planet and harming communities plagued by heavy truck traffic. A coalition of environmental justice, health, green and labor groups brought moving testimony to the California Air Resources Board and got the state to double the speed of transition to zero emissions heavy duty vehicles. California's Advanced Clean Truck Rule is part of the state's plan to get diesel trucks off the road by 2045. It has since been adopted by 5 other states.

Critical Race Theory with Dr. Camilla Westenberg

Summary:
Featured speakers/guests:
Civic Cipher's Ramses Ja and Q Ward are joined by former educator Dr. Camilla Westenberg whose claim to fame is being the first person to create an accredited Hip Hop literature class at the community college level.

With so much being said about Critical Race Theory being taught in schools, it felt right for Ramses and Q to have a decades-long educator with them for this deep dive into CRT. They discuss exactly what it is, the concerns surrounding it, and what difference it could make in the lives of students.

Dr. Westenberg was Professor Emeritus at Phoenix College and the second vice president of the Maricopa County chapter of the NAACP in Arizona.
