07:00-7:30  WINGS Global Homelessness ... its causes

Description: Human displacement and homelessness keep growing and growing. In a "parable" of uncertain attribution, there's a community struggling to save babies who float down river in increasing numbers, and someone says "Let's find out who's putting them in there."  Brazilian environmentalist and organizer Magda Renner made it her duty to find out. Renner passed away in 2016, at nearly 90 years of age. This is her address to the World Women's Congress for a Healthy Planet in 1991. On her list of causes are war, mining, land grabs, nuclear radiation, pesticides, masculine-style politics and development, and environmental destruction. She says women need to be in decision-making but not lose their humane values when they enter that realm. This meeting attended by 1500 women from around the world was a lead-in to the first UN Conference on the Environment in Rio de Janeiro, 1992. Update 2024.

WINGS archive, 1991: Then-Editor-In-Chief of Ms. Magazine Robin Morgan describes the fruitless struggle to get revelations about Clarence Thomas's history of sexism into mainstream media before he was confirmed to the US Supreme Court, and also how and why Ms. Magazine under her leadership went ad-free, because of the censorship power advertisers impose on media. Ms. has just released a book about its first 50 years of feminist publishing. Updates by Frieda Werden.

07:00-07:30 WINGS Cancer Math: The deep research of biometrist Rosalie Bertell

Biometry is the application of mathematical analysis to biological data. Mathematician Bertell was enticed into health research and did complex analyses on large data sets with many variables. Her first breakthrough was in showing how exposure to radiation increased the risk of metastasizing cancers - which convinced the US Congress to limit the use of X-rays to diagnostics. She was also able to trace the spike in breast cancers among cohorts of American women to their exposure to above-ground nuclear testing. Based on her Xray research, she came out against routine mammography, especially on younger women. Among other research topics, she worked on how pollution affects the health of whole communities. She was offended by campaigns that led individuals to try all sorts of things to prevent disease in themselves without looking at the environment around them. She was shunned and vilified by various persons with financial stakes that would be adversely affected by her work. But all the work she discusses in this 1994 interview is still relevant and not overturned today. The lessons she conveys are still needed.

07:00-07:30 WINGS  Saunas and Finnish women's culture

Kaarina Kailo's recent book (in Finnish) on the rich history of women and saunas reminded WINGS of this beautiful documentary, provided to WINGS by the now-defunct Euroquest series from Radio Netherlands. You really feel yourself there, and get an idea of how saunas have adapted to modern living in Finland and yet remain a major source of social cohesion, especially among women - perhaps accounting for the relatively high status and achievements of women in that country. (Kaarina's Sauna book will be out in English when she finds a publisher.)

7:00-7:30 -WINGS  El Nino in Kenya
Women prepare for disastrous rains

Despite President Ruto's announcement that severe El Nino rains would not affect Kenya, the country's meteorologist was right - there are floods and disasters and diseases seriously affecting the populus this rainy season. Three women talked with our Mombasa correspondent about how their organizations are dealing with those problems, and the increase in domestic violence, too.

Hamisa Zaja, program officer, Maji na Ufanisi (Water and Development); Aisha Al-Husseni, Mombasa County coordinator, Red Cross Society; Topista Juma, activist, Muhuri (Muslim for Human Rights)

07:00-07:30 WINGS Unmaking War, Remaking Men (Red Poppy Day Special)

[This program is good other times, but it references November 11, which is called Veterans' Day in the US and Remembrance Day in many other countries.]

Kathleen Barry is the author of several books, including /Female Sexual Slavery/, which triggered a global movement against sex trafficking, and this last work, /Unmaking War, Remaking Men: How Empathy Can Reshape our Politics, Our Soldiers and Ourselves/. She spoke with Kate Rafael, host of Women's Magazine on community radio KPFA in Berkeley, California, about both of those books. The discussion includes some details about the Geneva Conventions, and examples of how empathy affected men's behaviours and beliefs during war.

07:00-07:30 WINGS Ocean Ecocide

The deep sea floor has become a highly contested region of the world. Mining companies are eager to scrape up something called "nodules" that contain various minerals in high demand. Deep sea explorers and other environmentally conscious people are terrified about what damage that could cause not only to the oceans and its inhabitants, but to the climate of the earth. One of the world's most knowledgeable persons about the ocean floor - and avid opponent of Deep Sea Mining - is longtime deep sea explorer Sylvia Earle. In June 2023, she appeared for a Fireside Chat with John Vermilye of Mission Blue, at the Explorers Club. Includes sound track of a short film for which Earle collaborated with famed cellist YoYo Ma. She gives important information about fish and farming.

7:00-7:30  WINGS #26-23 The Nordic Model vs. the Sex Trade ... in Canada, Sweden, and the world.

Summary: In September 2023, a Superior Court judge in Ontario ruled that Canada's 2014 law outlawing the purchase of sex did not violate the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. That law was loosely modelled on Sweden's 1999 legislation - AKA the Nordic Model - which focuses on criminalizing the buyers. This program includes excerpts from a talk by Gunilla Ekberg, Special Advisor to Sweden's Division of Gender Equality, as well as audience members attending the Canadian Association of Sexual Assault Centres conference in 2005. Includes recognition of controversy, and the importance of financial supports to help with exits and to prevent recruitment. Updated to 2023.
