07:00-7:30 WINGS #08-23 Globalizing Feminism - Can the subalterns speak?

Length: 28:59.

Description: Excerpts from a keynote address to the US National Women's Studies Association, by the world-famous scholar of deconstructionism Gayatri Spivak. She takes as her theme the question from her best-known essay: Can the subaltern speak? The related question embedded in the talk is:  if she speaks, can she be properly understood, when the listeners superimpose their own context, language, and expectations on the messages of those they see as lowly. Global feminism is unfolding in a context of aggressive financialization of the whole world; to have any balance requires the agents of development learning to listen.

Gayatri Spivak is Professor of Humanities at Columbia University and the co-founder of the Institute for Comparative Literature and Society. She also runs four primary schools in India.  She became famous early in her career for translating and commenting on Jacques Derrida's seminal work Of Grammatology.

Sandler was Deputy Executive Director for Programmes at UNIFEM (the UN Development Fund for Women); Wakefield was Oxfam Internationals Senior Gender Justice Lead for 7 years; both are consultants and researchers. 07:00-07:30  WINGS  Seaweed farmers Mwanasiti Mkuu and Tima Mohammed Yusi; Dr. Jacqueline Uku, senior research scientist at the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Institute in Mombasa

Summary:  Kibuyuni Seaweed Self-Help Group in Shimoni, Kwale County, Kenya, was established by the community in 2010. This was after 2 years of trials of seaweed farming conducted by the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute (KMFRI). The community was selected for the project for geographical reasons, but has succeeded due to community solidarity and leadership. They have found value-added uses for the seaweed they raise such as food, soap and shampoo, as well as selling directly to processors. The funds have changed their families' lives for the better, including fixing houses and paying for their children's education. Two farmers speak, then scientist and international oceans diplomat Dr. Jacqueline Uku talks about the science and politics around the so-called Blue Economy, and some of its benefits and risks.

07:00-07:30 WINGS Reproductive Slavery - From the 19th to the 21st Centuries

“The Long Struggle to Abolish Reproductive Slavery” is a lecture by Dorothy E. Roberts - a professor of both Law and Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, and founding director of the Program on Race, Science & Society in the Center for Africana Studies. She traces the denial of Black women's reproductive and parenting rights to a 19th century court case that decided the offspring of enslaved persons were considered like animals, without human rights - even if they were the children of the owner himself. Stopping mistreatment of Black families was a paramount issue of the abolitionist cause and a major reason behind the 13th and 14th Amendments to the US Constitution. But the hateful attitudes continued into modern times, and are underlying the idea that state law can dictate the terms of pregnancy and parenting, now confirmed by the US Supreme Court - and applicable to all women. Roberts describes the longterm aims of Black feminists, and calls for unifying the movements for abortion rights, parental rights, and prison abolition.

The Rothko Chapel and the Bernard and Audre Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice at the University of Texas at Austin hosted this 2023 Frances Tarlton 'Sissy' Farenthold Endowed Lecture in Peace, Social Justice and Human Rights on February 15, 2023.  Edited for radio by Frieda WerdenSendungen des feministischen Radionetzwerkes und von freien Radios weltweit.

07:00-7:30 LGBTQI+ Win-Lose Court Decision in Kenya

Summary:  After ten years of appeals, Kenya's Supreme Court ruled in February 2023 that organizations with words like lesbian and gay in the title are allowed to register as NGOs. However,  same-sex sexual relations have been illegal since the British occupation. This win has set off a frightening backlash against already marginalized sexual minorities. Activist and advocate Esther Nalima gives a detailed portrait of the hazards for such individuals. She says people have a right to express their feelings but not when it harms others' rights, and that holy books don't only talk about sex they talk about love. Clips from the banned lesbian film Rafiki are included.
