A celebration of poetry for National Poetry Month, brought to us by Grace Cavalieri ("The Poet and the Poem"). In the first half, Kansas City poet Linda Rodriguez reads poems about clean water, domestic violence, and women at a chemo clinic. Linda has both Hispanic and Cherokee heritage. In the second half, 7th grade girls from an all-Muslim school in Washington read poems and discuss poetry with Grace after having spent a day in her writing workshop. Their clear, sweet tones of innocence complement the voice of experience Linda Rodriguez offers.

A new documentary production group, Upstream ("Inviting you to unlearn everything you thought you knew about economics"), brings you the Solidarity Economy--a phenomenon in which the forces of exploitation that Capitalism promotes are countered by the forces of mutual aid, such as credit unions, affordable housing strategies, and so on. We learn of its recent origins in 1990s Peru and before that, during the Great Depression; indeed, the Solidarity Economy is strengthened during times of crisis. We also dream about its potential in the face of ecological peril and plan for what it will take to grow the Solidarity Economy to serve as a movement of movements.

Sylvia Richardson ("Latin Waves") interviews Dr Robert Jensen on his newest book, "The End of Patriarchy: Radical Feminism for Men." He calls upon men to challenge institutionalized male dominance. He argues cogently that men should do this not only for justice's sake but for their own sake, that doing so will mitigate the violence and coercion that are at the heart of all systems of domination and subordination. Robert Jensen is a professor of media law, ethics and politics at the University of Texas, Austin. He also writes for popular media.

A generational gap in the LGBTQ community is leaving many young LGBTQ people in the dark when it comes to the history of the LGBTQ rights movement. As young people strive and often struggle to accept themselves, this lack of knowledge can be extremely harmful, potentially leaving them isolated and more prone to self-destructive behaviors, including suicide.
There are several reasons for this gap. Consider how history gets passed down from generation to generation. Mainstream history is formally taught in schools. Family history is passed down through stories told by parents and grandparents. It's easy and natural, as it should be.

Detroit's 7-acre D-Town Farm is one of the largest urban farms in the country and is associated with a "Food Warriors" program for youth age 7-12 and a "What's For Dinner" lecture series. Its founder, Malik Kenyatta Yakini, explains why it was necessary for Detroit blacks to take ownership of the urban gardening movement, which had previously been led by whites. He describes a city of 900,000 that is served by no major grocery stores, and how a wave of gentrification is creating "two Detroits". He feels it is less important for us to resist what we are against than to create a vision of what we are for. Love is the guiding principle of the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network, along with African self-determination.

Along with a growing community of activists who grew weary of traditional activism after years of negligible results, Michelle Holman formed Community Rights Lane County (CRLC; communityrightslanecounty.org) in Oregon. Prior to that she had followed the well-worn path that citizens are expected to follow: writing letters, testifying at hearings, attending protests, and making our voices known to those with decision making authority, only to learn that the game was rigged and that the outcome was pre-determined to favor those corporate interests that seek to maximize profits at the expense of our communities. Michelle Holman presents "community rights" activism is a way to reclaim democracy in the face of a broken system.
Supported by the 2012 Community Environmental Legal Defense Funds (CELDF~celdf.org/) Democracy School school Michelle explains why being able to stop corporate harms from occurring in our communities is possible.

Second installment in a three-part audio documentary about how women have been colonized by men and the many ways in which they resist this.
The series describes how for six centuries, Western male elite has built a viciously patriarchal world, making war on women and exploiting them mercilessly. It also explores how profits of the global capitalist system have been made possible by the genocide and plunder of women.

Over two extraordinary days on the National Mall in Washington DC we met Trump voters, and anti-Trump protesters, who had come in from far and wide for the inauguration and the Women's March that followed it. Despite some clashes, most exercised their democratic rights in good faith. But America's stark divisions were nonetheless on display.

This week's Sprouts comes to us from producers Ken Nash and Mimi Rosenberg of WBAI's Building Bridges. They interviewed the Reverend William Barber II of North Carolina, who as President of the state's NAACP provided the vision behind a powerful grassroots movement called Moral Mondays. This movement has used mass demonstrations to challenge the N.C. legislature's regressive agenda against gay marriage and voting rights, and more recently, its attempt to strip the incoming Democratic governor of power. In the tradition of Martin Luther King Jr., Reverend Barber speaks about the absolute necessity of fusing the interests of blacks and working-class whites, especially in the face of Trumpism, and especially in the South.
