Feminismus überall_es: WINGS

The inclusion of life-threatening domestic and gang violence as reasons for seeking asylum abroad is being weakened and effectively deleted by the current US Attorney General. This documentary covers women who have fled Guatemala to try to access asylum in the USA. One succeeds, one does not. Voices in the program: Albertina Gutierrez, US Asylum Seeker, Mother of Two, from Guatemala; Denise Gilman, San Antonio-based Immigration Attorney; Alessandra, recently arrived from Guatemala to the US; Sister Consuelo, Backpack Volunteer with RAICES in San Antonio, Texas; Lynn Stephen, Oregon-based anthropologist and president-elect of the Latin American Studies Association; Lucia, asylum seeker from Guatemala who was rejected by the US

An interview with Sizani Ngubane, co-founder of the Rural Women's Movement based in KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa, about the origins of rape culture in her region, its confusion with the traditional cultural practice of ukuthwala, and the delicate process of bringing communities to reject, prosecute and defend against all forms of rape and abduction.
Host(s): Sarah Newton, Frieda Werden
Featured Speakers/Guests: Sizani Ngubane is a lifelong activist. Since the end of apartheid, she has focused her attention on women's rights at local, national, and international levels. In 1998, she left her position as a Gender Specialist at the Association for Rural Development to concentrate on building the Rural Women's Movement, which does many kinds of projects

Excerpts from a talk in Vancouver by Sarah Schulman, author of the book Conflict Is Not Abuse: Overstating Harm, Community Responsibility, and the Duty of Repair.
Sarah Schulman is the author of a dozen novels, a playwright and nonfiction writer. She has had a long activist career, including being a founder of the Lesbian Avengers, an early member of ACT-UP, and an advisor to Jewish Voices for Peace. She is now a Distinguished Professor of the Humanities at College of Staten Island (CSI) and a Fellow at the New York Institute for the Humanities.
The United Nations World Conference on Population and Development, 1994, was a battleground between feminists and the Vatican. Maria Suarez Toro was there as both activist and broadcaster from Latin America. She tells how she and others from Latin America organized around the document that emerged.

Mara Surez Toro was a founding producer of the Costa Rica-based Feminist International Radio Endeavour (FIRE)/Radio Feminista Internacional. For many years she did live broadcasting on shortwave and then on the internet. She also taught communications at universities in the US and Sweden, and provided grassroots adult literacy training across Latin America. Her published works include Womens Voices on FIRE, chronicling the program's first eight years.

- Lively and informative recording of a rally outside Connecticut's only women's prison in May 2018. Groups around the country have been holding Christmas bail-outs and Mothers Day Bail-Outs to free incarcerated women. most of whom are mothers, from pre-trial detention. The Connecticut Bail Fund raised $30,000 to bail out 30 women in time to be home for Mothers Day 2018. That included four women released from immigration jail.

- From the podcast series Gender at Work, feminists with experience in United Nations and aid organizations explain how policies to stop discrimination and abuse of privilege fail, and what might discourage the culture of impunity.

Since 1982, feminists in Oslo have had a regular piece of the airwaves. They consider theirs to be the first women's radio station. They go the extra mile to get mostly female-oriented content in news, interviews, and music. This hip community station is constantly renewed by being passed on to younger women through training and mentorship. Interviews from 2000 and Norwegian women's music from 1999 feature in this gem from the WINGS archive.

Leymah Gbowee, Feminist Peacemaker
Shortly before she was announced as a Nobel Peace Laureate, Leymah Gbowee was on a book tour in the US. She gave Janie Rezner of Women's Voices a passionate and wide-ranging interview about herself, her culture, the successful Liberian women's peace movement, and why women must take our share of responsibility for politics and peacemaking. References UNSCR 1325 Leymah Gbowee [pronounced LAY-mah, BEAU-wee] is a trained trauma abuse counsellor, a domestic abuse survivor, and a hereditary matriarch. She led Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace, which forced the negotiations that ended the Second Liberian Civil War in 2003. Their actions are featured in the film Pray the Devil Back to Hell. Gbowee authored the book Mighty Be Our Powers. She continues to work with women to make peace

UNSCR 1325
Adopted unanimously by the UN Security Council on 31 October 2000, 1325 calls for women's participation in conflict resolution, peacekeeping, and peacebuilding. The now-closed Women's Tribune Center, which specialized in disseminating information from the UN in forms usable at the grassroots, commissioned radio announcements and dramas on the topic. Included in this 2007 WINGS production are dramas from Uganda, the Philippines, and Liberia. Also two interviews - see Guests.
