We use our words as weapons, says longtime therapist and author Sharon Ellison, "most of us communicate from a place where we feel defensive and like victims most of the time." Communicating without attacking or defending is harder than you might think, but sometimes a single neutral, gentle, curious question can shift years of negative interactions. A lot of them could change the world.

Believing recruiters' lies, "Karine," "Susan" and "Cynthia" flew to Kuwait for well-paying jobs, only to find themselves as housemaids forced to work 18 hours a day, locked in with no means of communication, beaten, hungry, sexually advanced on, robbed of their possessions, and sleeping on the floor. They tell how they got there and how they escaped.

Six years ago, the 50-year-old Sydney Rape Crisis Centre was given a government mandate to have its counselors answer national calls at 1800RESPECT, but no increase in funds to handle the tripling work load. Recently the government announced a vast increase in funds but gave it all to a for-profit insurance company to run a triage service using answerers working from home. Complaints, unionization, and a campaign called No Profit from Rape have ensued. Program has two speeches by Simone White,- one about the government's neoliberal approach to social services generally, and one, on International Women's Day, about the specific case of 1800RESPECT.

Third and final episode of the series Women, The Oppressed Majority, discusses prehistoric matriarchies and contemporary matrilineal societies where economic basis is satisfying needs; women's role in socialist revolutions; visions for life without patriarchy from perspectives of a trans woman, a dominatrix, and a Wiccan; and an idea of how to get beyond patriarchy with worldwide women's activism. Madelaine Imber and Tandiwe Aebi-Moyo, participants in edition 2 of the new Australian magazine Butch Is Not a Dirty Word, talk about their lives as butches in various communities and about being in the new magazine created by Melbourne-based Butch activist, Esther Godoy. They are interviewed by Jiselle Hanna on her program Accent of Women, which airs weekly on community radio 3CR in Melbourne.
